Thanks to the hard work of Midvale's PTA, a new play structure was dedicated today on the Midvale campus. The fundraising campaign spanned several years and resulted in a beautiful, engaging, interesting and fun new play space for Midvale's students and the community. Assistant Principal Ms. Dougherty welcomed students, staff and parents to the event. We were honored to have Tucker's mayor and several council members in attendance for the ceremony, which included words of inspiration from guidance counselor Ms. Griffin, a speech by Student Council President Anna, and reflections by Mr. Moseley, PTA President. What a wonderful day to celebrate Midvale's community spirit and the hard work of PTA to bring this project to fruition. Thank you to all who were present today, and to all who continue to make Midvale a great place to teach and learn!
On Friday, April 17th, fifth grade students presented the Global Leaders Wax Museum, the culmination of their IB Primary Years Programme studies. Students portrayed historical and contemporary figures who have brought about significant social change through their actions and example. Take a look below for some highlights from the Exhibition!
Two teams of students represented Midvale at the U.S. Navy's SeaPerch underwater robotics competition on March 28th. Under the direction of STEM Coordinator Mr. Kitchen, the students presented a poster and described the rationale behind the robot design, and competed in two pool events. In the water, the robot had to be guided through an obstacle course and also complete a series of challenging underwater tasks. Midvale's team of Michael, Halle and Kylie finished 1st in the presentation part of the contest and 3rd in the pool events, competing against elementary, middle and high schools from all around the Atlanta area. The team of Grace, Douda, Mattie, Zay'Brel and Isaac also represented Midvale well!
Students were treated to presentations from great community volunteers who shared with students what it takes to be successful in all types of careers, from self-employed entrepreneurs to the military. Thanks to all who enlightened our students. Under the direction of IB Coordinator Ms. Sue Levy, students engaged in a spirited contest showcasing their knowledge and understanding of map skills, people and places. The Bee was conducted on January 21st. Fifth grader Brandon B. emerged as the winner, and will continue on to the next level of competition.
Thanks to Midvale's PTA for bringing a cultural arts performance by Havana Son to the entire school. The duo presented a fun and informational musical tour of Latin American countries. Students were introduced to instruments, songs and dances from several places, including Cuba, Panama and Dominican Republic. Under the direction of art teacher extraordinaire, Mrs. Eugenia Mullis, the artwork of FIVE Midvale students will be featured in the 2015 calendar produced by the DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management! The students and Mrs. Mullis were honored in a ceremony on December 10th, where they were recognized by the County Board of Commissioners. What a tremendous accomplishment! Congratulations to Mrs. Mullis and to first graders Anna C., Naomi and Sophia M, to third grader Jennifer and fifth grade student Zay'Brel. Midvale is proud of you! Fourth graders culminate their study of Native peoples with a potlatch, or ceremonial feast, as celebrated by tribes in the Pacific Northwest. Crafts, games, food and dancing highlight this learning experience. Students were very lucky that Sutton's dad, who has been attending powwows since he was a young teenager, came to share dance traditions and information. Check out the slideshow below. A BIG thank you to our amazing cafeteria staff, who prepared and served a delicious luncheon on Wednesday, November 19th. It was wonderful to see so many families from the Midvale community in attendance. Click HERE to see some scenes from the day. |
